بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Dear Community Members
As Salamu Alaikum,
I would like to share with you some important updates regarding the Islamic Society of North America – Canada (ISNA Canada).
In 2011, an audit was carried out by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the period 2007–2009. In 2014, the CRA shared their audit findings which identified ISNA Canada’s failures to comply with proper management of charitable donations. We have spent the last decade rectifying these mistakes and reforming our organization to ensure that we have a robust governance structure in place so that the mistakes made are not repeated.
Alhamdulillah, we remain a registered charity in Canada. However, we are required to pay a fine for the non-compliance during the 2007–2009 period. In addition, for the period of September 12, 2018, to September 11, 2019, ISNA Canada will not be allowed to issue tax receipts to our donors.
In such times, the Qur’an reminds us:
This decision has come at a time when ISNA Canada has made progressive and significant changes to our governance, vision and how we operate as one of the largest Muslim organizations in Canada. In recent months, we have taken significant steps in listening to and meeting the community’s needs and we are set to launch our long-term strategy in just a few weeks’ time, inshallah.
We will continue our operations and remain committed to striving always to be the best possible organization we can be in service to the Muslim community.
As a community member, I want to thank you for your continued support for ISNA Canada. We are hopeful for your patience, support, and trust as we work through these challenges.
Jazakum Allahu khayran,
Dr. Kathrine Bullock
Chair – Board of Directors
